It was mid May when I first saw the local swans with their newly hatched brood. I counted seven cygnets. I watched them until the beginning of June, when suddenly one was missing. Bad weather stopped any sightings until mid June and then four were missing. A week later five had vanished. Happily, at the end of June there were still two surviving cygnets. A cygnet's life can be short and (probably) savage.
