MS Queen Elizabeth World Cruise.

There were fireworks over Southampton Water one evening last week, it happened again yesterday, and the day before, and it will probably be the same tonight and tomorrow night. The cruise ships are beginning their round the world trips and the fireworks are part of their traditional send-off. Last night the two Queens (Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary 2) set off on their world cruises, their whistles boomed across the water, the fireworks were magnificent and I was out there on my balcony in the cold night air, watching and waving and loving every minute.

If you were on board one of the Queens last night, you will now be looking forward to three months at sea, back home in April, ticking off a long list of strange sounding places on the way. The Queen Elizabeth itinerary reads something like this:- Southampton, New York, Fort Lauderdale, Cayman Islands, Cartagena, Panama Canal, Puntarenas, Cabo San Lucas, San Francisco, Honolulu, Pago Pago, Port Denarau, Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Port Douglas, Kota Kinabalu, Hong Kong, Chan May, Ho Chi Minh City, Bangkok, Ko Samui, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Phuket, Colombo, Cochin, Mumbai, Dubai, Muscat, Luxor, Aqaba, Sharm El Sheikh, Suez, Port Said, Alexandria, Piraeus, Civitavecchia, Monte Carlo, Lisbon, Southampton. 109 days! Sounds nice, but for the time being I'm very happy to watch and wave....

The photo is a long shot across Southampton Water and shows the fireworks, MS Queen Elizabeth and some rather lovely rippling reflections.
